Little Monkey and the Tiny Mermaid

The Little Monkey lived on a big island.(How he got there he did not know because it didn’t exactly feel like home, but it was the only home he remembered.) He liked to swing through the trees and go exploring with his friend Bluey (who was a secret, magic butterfly that most people could not see!). One day they were going far across the forest, Bluey often riding on little monkey’s tail for a rest.
As they were swinging gaily from branch to branch through the treetops they saw the sea shining in the sunshine…

.. So they decided to explore the beach. When they were clambering over the rocks … well Bluey was holding on tight to little monkey’s tail… they thought they heard a faint cry … it got louder as they went round the cliff at the end of the beach…

...And they saw, caught between the the rocks in one of the rock pools, a beautiful mermaid with her tail jammed… one of the rocks had fallen on it!
She was so tired from trying to get free that now she could hardly move at all.

Bluey fluttered round her head, soothing her with an invisible magic dance, while Little Monkey somehow managed to lean, with all his weight, on the rock and gently eased it off her bruised mer-tail.

The tiny mermaid was very happy to be free, but very frightened as she had not seen a monkey before, and her mer-tail hurt so much she did not know what to do. How was she going to swim home… she could not even remember where it was.

Bluey whispered to Little Monkey and Little Monkey smiled. Then Little Monkey told her about his magical friend Bluey, who could help her feel better… and that she would be able to see the butterfly if she really wanted to… and she did! And so she let Bluey dance on her…  while Little Monkey held her hand.

When Bluey softly landed on her head and started fluttering his wings, she closed her eyes and went into a dream. Bluey very gently danced the magic dance, humming a song to himself ...down to her forehead and along her glistening eyebrow ...to the side of her eye and below (careful not to get too wet from the tears that were still sticking to her big eyelashes)
He then fluttered under her little nose and under her mouth. Her gentle sigh helped him fly down to her chest and...
...just below the neckline of her shimmering pearl beaded top, he danced in the shape of a butterfly! ...the tiny mermaid seemed to be asleep so Bluey danced on and on until she opened her eyes.
He then flew to Little Monkey’s hand which held hers and he flew round and round, on her wrist, on her finger tips and down the side of her hand. She smiled and said the pain was much less now and she felt much better.

The tiny mermaid told them about the dream she had while Bluey was dancing round her: She dreamed she was back with her mer-mummy and mer-daddy, before she had been separated from them in the storm. She remembered so clearly now the way home, because in her dream she could see the beautiful shining streams of light, that her parents were sending to her, to guide her home… And she could hear their musical calls.

Little Monkey and Bluey then noticed that the tiny mermaid had really started to glow… every part of her was shimmering brighter and brighter, from the top of her head, even her long flowing hair… and right down her body to the tip of her lovely mer-tail!

Now during this time the tide had turned and the rockpools were filling up again! They must say goodbye… The tiny mermaid thanked them both very much, and smiling a radiant smile... carefully at first, testing her tail, then stronger and stronger, she swam through the waves, stopping now and then to wave at them.

When she was out of sight, which did not take very long, they hastily left the beach and went back home swinging through the trees. (Bluey again holding on tight to Little Monkey’s tail). They were very happy to have helped!

(The tiny mermaid loved Bluey’s dance so much she taught it to her friend the yellow seahorse and together they helped her mer-friends whenever needed… But that is another story!)
